A video clip posted on Facebook shows a child, around seven or eight years old, being held upside down with a camel's hump tied around their neck and being dragged across the ground. The person filming or editing the clip, which contains material from a private collection, has not been identified or interviewed.
According to the military's statement, the boy - who is at least 10 years old, but could be more than 12 - was kidnapped by a group of armed men.
There have been no confirmed reports of an abduction in Gujarat, the region where the video clip was filmed. But activists fear that it is an example of one of the most pervasive crimes in Indian society, child trafficking.
"These boys are not just being physically abused. They are being emotionally abused, and that makes it even more awful," said Paul Coleman, founder of the US-based NGO Kids of Conscience.
Rahul Tendulkar, an activist working with victims of child trafficking and slavery in India, said there were some 1,800 cases of modern-day slavery involving children each year. Most of them are trafficked from the poorer states of Assam, Chhattisgarh and Odisha in the north-east, he said. In recent years, children have also been trafficked from the state of Madhya Pradesh in the east to the capital, New Delhi, where they are forced into the sex trade.
Last year, the Indian government introduced an anti-trafficking law, the first such crime-fighting law in the world, but so far there has been only limited progress in implementing it.
"Unfortunately, child trafficking is a crime most people don't even know about, because most of the victims are children whose families do not want to raise the issue," said Tendulkar. " 0b46394aab
